Serbis

A drama that follows the travails of the Pineda family in the Filipino city of Angeles. Bigamy, unwanted pregnancy, possible incest and bothersome skin irritations are all part of their daily challenges, but the real "star" of the show is an enormous, dilapidated movie theater that doubles as family business and living space. At one time a prestige establishment, the theater now runs porn double bills and serves as a meeting ground for hustlers of every conceivable persuasion. The film captures the sordid, fetid atmosphere, interweaving various family subplots with the comings and goings of customers, thieves and even a runaway goat while enveloping the viewer in a maelstrom of sound, noise and continuous motion.

Ang Lalake Sa Parola

Here, he meets Jerome (Justin de Leon), a gay man from the city. What ensues soon after the meeting is the beginning of his homoerotic journey, while Suzet (Jennifer Lee), Mateo’s girlfriend struggles for his love and attention. What begins as a search for one’s father evolves into a search for one’s self. Will Mateo, in the midst of his conservative rural community, cross the thin line between being straight and being gay? This story is a search for oneself as seen through the lens of rural homosexuality, myths, and fairies (superstitions/belief?); and the lies that people create to escape the bitter realities of life.

Tragic deaths happen caused by Mark (Ryan), the building caretaker who turns out to be the devil trapping souls into the vortex. He is also the incubus that makes love to Grace. Bigasan

Bigasan is one of those films that feel overly familiar, as if everything in it is something that you’ve seen before. It rehashes every faux-indie plot produced in the last five years, tacking on only the most facile of changes. But if the only crime Bigasan committed was being familiar, that wouldn’t be too bad. The bigger problem is that none of the stories actually go anywhere, the movie feeling like seventy minutes of wheel-spinning and fabricated drama. Bigasan tells the story of a poor community regularly by government trucks selling rice at subsidized prices. The people line up for hours to get their share of the rice, while those who don’t have money to pay for their meager portion end up doing all sorts of things in order to get food on the table. There’s the mother (Ana Capri) who pimps out her teenage son to a gay benefactor. There’s young mother who prostitutes herself. There’s her husband who works despite having tuberculosis. There’s the elderly woman who lives off the scraps of a ruthless loan shark.

Santuaryo

Santuaryo is an indie film that centers on the unfolding narration of a young man named Archie (Basti Romero). Archie went looking for a treasure when he came into the possession of an ancient map left by an old adventurer. His journey left him battered and cloudy with memories as he was found drifting on the ocean and later, rescued by island fishermen. When his long time lover, William (Wil Sandejas) arrives at his side, he is forced to painfully recall what happened to him and describes how he crossed paths with a group of boys looking for the same treasure. In the end, Archie realizes what is most valuable in life and it is in his relationship with William that he finds his greatest fortune. The film introduces a set of new indie actors led by former commercial and ramp model, Basti Romero. He is joined by Justin Dizon, Nicos Bacani, Gino Quintana, A.J. Ona and Ralph Mateo.

Heavenly Touch

Heavenly Touch is director Joel Lamangan’s latest foray into independent filmmaking, and once again, he returns to the realm of the ever-profitable gay-themed movie. And yet again, this movie is little more than an excuse to show off some male genitalia, offering little to the moviegoer who goes to the cinemas for coherent stories or good filmmaking. Heavenly Touch is an ugly wreck of a film, one that doesn’t think that stories matter at all. Jonard (Joash Balejado) is having trouble making ends meet. His mother is suffering from depression, and he and his sister are forced to quit school in order to take care of her. One day, Jonard meets up his friend Rodel (Paolo Serrano), and Rodel introduces him to the world of massage parlors. Rodel teaches him massage, and brings him to Heavenly Touch, a syndicate-run massage parlor that mostly caters to homosexuals. As Jonard grows comfortable with his new life, he finds himself getting closer to Rodel. But when the threat of eviction looms, Jonard is forced to do things he never thought he’d do.

Discreetly

After celebrating their first year anniversary, Cris intends to bring his boyfriend together with his long time buddy to a dinner with his mother as a ploy to slowly come out to his mom. Little does he know that on the night of the agreed dinner, mother has already discovered that her son is gay and has already made her grand conversion plan. Discreetly is about the often sad, sometimes funny moments that Filipino gays encounter when they come out to their families or when families discover their true sexuality.

Binyag

The first one-third of the movie -- which is a picturesque passage of this quiet man frolicking in the waves and rocky formations, ignoring his female admirer (Ynez Veneracion), but intrigued by an older gay man (Simon Ibarra) -- made me think I was watching something special. There's a generosity in director Mico Jacinto's compositions, not only in the keen technical attention that promotes the glossy capabilities of the P2 camera and shames many digital movies that try to look expensive, but even more for what he chooses to show and how much. There is no shortage in coverage of sun-glazed images, which match the exploration of Ran Domingo's body as if it were the most magnificent of terrains.

Imoral

Tackles the dynamics of the relationship of a husband with his wife and his lover -- and they all live together in one house.
